Our 911 is an early production MY ‘66 Coupe originally sold through the storied Vasek Polak Porsche dealership in Manhattan Beach in April of 1966. Over its fifty eight year life, it has had eight owners, resided entirely in Southern California, accumulated over 238,000 chassis miles and gone through three engines. We are the eighth and longest owners. My wife purchased the car just out of college in 1984 as a replacement for the broken down hand-me-down VW van her parents had sold to her. It was a case of “I need a car right now” and a friend of a friend from work said they knew a local high school teacher who was selling a car and she should look into it. Two phone calls later, one to the seller and one to the bank for a loan, she was standing in front of the car with a smile on her face and the keys (and pink slip) in her hand, it was just that fast. It became her daily driver until well after we were married in ’93 and the arrival of our two children which necessitated adding an SUV to the garage, though on numerous occasions it still served as a grocery getter and kid hauler to school and other events in addition to weekend, date night, and military reserve weekend transportation duty. In 2017, its age was really starting to show. The cabin was deafeningly loud at freeway speeds due to all the door seals being original and dried out, the vinyl seats, though covered by “period” sheepskin seat covers were split, and the wash water took on a Bahama Yellow tinge every time we washed it as the paint was literally washing off. As a member of the family, we knew we couldn’t go halfway so a full restoration was in order and were lucky to find a local custom shop that would allow us to use a corner of their space and equipment for our “project”. After two and a half years, hundreds of hours, gallons of sweat and numerous bruises, busted knuckles, and more than a few expletives, our restoration was complete. Our 911 now enjoys a less strenuous life of weekend driver, date night transporter, cars & coffee, cruise night, auto show, and PCA concours participant as we truly enjoy sharing the car with others. At last year’s Werks Reunion in Monterey we actually had a reunion. We meet owner number five. He saw the car, recognized the rather distinctive original license plate it still has, walked up to me and introduced himself by saying “I used to own that car”. We had a great conversation and I learned a great deal about the car’s life while it was in his care. He even offered me the car’s lead nose weights that he still had (he had been using them as door stops in his shop). Vintage Porsche ownership is truly like joining a family. Now we just need to meet the rest of the relatives. We attended our first PCA Porsche Parade event last year where we and the car received its highest honor to date. Representatives from Porsche AG attend each year’s event and select from all the Concours participants their favorite. For 2023, the 75th anniversary year of Porsche and the 60th anniversary of the 911, they unanimously decided that Bahama Yellow was in and presented us the coveted Judges Choice Trophy. We were stunned and very humbled that the manufacturer thought that highly of our simple 911. Serial #303664 was restored to near original condition. As much of the original car was preserved as possible (sheet metal, chrome, glass, trim, etc.). The rare Bahama Yellow and Brown leather color combination are original. The engine is a ’71 911T 2.2L with their original Zenith carburetors. It was the engine that was in the car when purchased in ’84, it runs perfectly, despite having accumulated an estimated 120,000 miles, visually, it looks virtually identical to the 2.0L original, so it was cleaned up and put back in. The brake system has been upgraded to a ’67 911S dual circuit/vented front disk configuration for safety (the system was a single circuit one in ’66) and the 5.5” Fuchs alloy wheels were left on as, again, they too were on the vehicle when it was purchased and, frankly, we think they look better than the original “steelies”.
